The goal of this project is to investigate how young adults who identify as both queer and Muslim integrate these two identities into a cohesive sense of self.
To be eligible to participate, you need to self-identify as Queer and Muslim. The term Queer can include identities such as gay, lesbian, bisexual, demisexual, asexual, greysexual, pansexual in addition to those who identify as trans or transgender. As a Muslim, you must have been raised with at least one parent or guardian who is Muslim as well. Converts to Islam who did not grow up in a Muslim household are not eligible for this study. Participants must be 18-24 years old and must be enrolled in a 4-year college or university in the U.S.
No. All that matters is that you hold the Queer and Muslim identities together and choose this label for yourself. There are not restrictions on behaviors and practices either. So, you could identify as Queer without having had any sexual or romantic experiences, and identify as Muslim even if you do not practice Islam regularly (or even have the occasional piece of bacon).
If you are eligible to participate, you will be asked to complete a short demographic questionnaire (about 5 minutes) and invited to participate in 2 interviews, each around 60 minutes-long. You will also be invited to share, during the second interview, one (or more) object or artifact (digital or physical) that represents your experience as a queer Muslim. You may stop your involvement with the study at any time without any penalties.
Your participation is confidential which means that your identity will not be shared with anyone outside of the researcher. At the beginning of your interview, you will be asked to choose a pseudonym, or a fake name, which will then be used to refer to you in the later parts of the research. Your contact information will be stored separately from your interview transcripts or recordings and will be destroyed upon the completion of the study. If you choose to participate, I am legally obligated to hold all your infomation in strict confidence
Yes! Those who are questioning their sexuality and identify as Muslims are eligible to participate. In fact, talking through some of these topics may help you sort through what you've been thinking or feeling.
No. There is no payment associated with participation. However, as a "thank you" each participant will receive a $20 gift card for each interview they complete.
